Abstract

In recent decades, interest in burnout research has grown substantially, resulting in a considerable accumulation of research findings. The most prominent framework in this area, the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, has undergone several updates to reflect this advancement. However, despite recent revisions to the JD-R model and a growing body of research connecting burnout complaints with goal striving and its practical implications, the role of goals and goal striving remains underdeveloped.
In this theoretical overview, we review recent advancements in the JD-R model, highlight the need for a more systematic integration of goals, and propose an updated model incorporating goal striving into this influential framework. We also outline potential avenues for future research and discuss the associated challenges and ways to move forward.
